Where to eat in BOLINAO – Sungayan Grill

For the first part of my Pangasinan travel blog series, let me talk about our experience dining over at the Sungayan Grill – Taste of Bolinao.

We ordered the Bilao Package B (P1500) that has Boiled Shrimps and Crabs, Grilled Bangus, Grilled Squid, Grilled Liempo, Grilled Eggplants, Okra, Tomatoes, Mangoes, and a type of seaweed (I forgot what it was called! I tried it and it was super salty!) The package also came with a pitcher of iced tea and a platter of rice. This was said to be good for seven to eight people. Among the eight of us (my high school barkada, and my Kuya Randy and Ka Hernan) all we had to order in addition was two platters of rice (Each platter was good for two to three people), Beef Nilaga (because two of my girlfriends were allergic to shrimp and crabs! So sad!) and individual drinks (Buko Shake and Mango Shakes, P70/each)

To be honest,  there was nothing special about the food (I have eaten better liempo and bangus elsewhere!) but the servings were huge. Lines could get long (I’m not sure if they take reservations because we just walked in!) but the staff were all very  friendly and they will assist you fast. We got there at around 12:30 in the afternoon and was told that we were third in line. We only had to wait 15 minutes until seated. Also, because the setting is outdoors, be prepared to share the space with some flies and bugs (Use mosquito repellent if you must!) The heat also becomes unbearable if there is no wind, but that only happens rarely and for only a few minutes at a time. They also have a live band performing all throughout your stay. Basically, I suggest you don’t go here for the food, but for the view and the experience of dining on a balsa while floating on a river.

Aside from the huge servings of seafood and various boodle fight type meals, Sungayan Grill also offers a full river cruise experience of the Loboc River for an additional P1000. Our group wasn’t able to avail of this because of lack of time – so I’m hoping that we get to try it the next time we go back!
