Touch Of Care: Ate Only Wants What Is Best For You
Do you remember the times you fell sick and all it took for you to feel better was a caring touch and gesture from someone? I do! And more than the symptomatic relief I get from the medications I take, most of the pain was alleviated by a simple touch of care (in whatever form) from a loved one.
A few days ago, my sister asked me to send her a retreat letter. We are not the type of family who is very verbal about how we feel for each other, because we show it through actions rather than words. But, given the distance of the current circumstance (she was out of town and I was at work) I took this opportunity to say what I’ve always wanted to say – in a way I know how to best, thru writing.
Here is an excerpt of my letter to her.
“Life is not perfect. There will be happy days. There will be extremely happy days. There will be sad ones. And there will be extremely sad ones. There will be times when you would wish time would go faster. And there will be days you would want nothing but for time to stop. But these kind of days are very rare. Because for the most of your life – it will be just routine. You will go day by day, waking up at the same hour, eating the same food, doing the same things, interacting with the same people, over and over and over again. BUT, and this is very important, on those days that are happy and extremely happy, on those days that are sad and extremely sad, on those days where you wish time would go faster or completely stop – those days you have to remember. Because those kind of days are usually filled with memories and experiences you would remember forever…
… I wish I knew these things before – or had someone to talk to about it. But all I had was myself. Remember, I made a lot of mistakes, and I am telling you these things because I do not want them to happen to you. Because if there is one thing I would want to be able to give you, it is for you to know that Ate only wants what is best for you.”
As a Nurse who deals with sick people on a daily basis, this is something I understand fully. As a daughter, sister, and friend – this goes the same. And I truly believe that therapeutic touch (be it in the form of being physically or emotionally there) has the power to transform the most mundane moments into unforgettable ones – and that no matter what your background is, or whatever illness or problem you harbor, everyone deserves a touch of care whenever they need it. It could come from anyone – a parent, a sister, a friend. Just like Agnes, whose circumstances made her into Jason’s Mother. After all, true love is unconditional love.
Everyone is capable of showing love, compassion and care. All you need to do – is decide that it starts with you!
